History of Howlett Hall
(Former First National Bank of Absecon Building)

Howlett HallThe First National Bank of Absecon was established in 1916 in a small frame building on New Jersey Avenue (Then the White Horse Pike). In 1921 the brick building at the corner of Station Avenue and New Jersey Avenue was erected. The building was designed by a then prominent Atlantic City architect, S. Hudson Vaugh (1871-1932). The new brick bank building was dedicated on July 7, 1921.

In 1950 the bank’s board of directors decided to build a new, larger facility just west of Howlett Hardware and sell the old bank building to Howlett Hardware. Leo and Margie Howlett used the building for storage up until 2000 when they donated the old brick bank building to Absecon City for the use by the Absecon Historical Society as a historical museum.
